Most Rev. Dr. Christian Noel Emmanuel

Most. Rev. Dr. Christian Noel Emmanuel was born December 25, 1960 in Trincomalee. After secondary school, he entered the St. Joseph’s Minor Seminary, Uppuveli, Trincomalee.

During 1978-1981 he studied philosophy at the National Seminary of Our Lady of Lanka, Ampitiya, Kandy. After a year of regency in 1983 he entered the St. Paul’s Major Seminary, Triruchirappally, in India for theological studies, which he completed in 1986.

He was ordained deacon 12 March, 1985 and was incardinated in the then undivided Diocese of Trincomalee – Batticaloa. He received priestly ordination on May 21, 1986, in the Cathedral of Trincomalee.

He then held various positions: Assistant Priest at the Co-Cathedral, Batticaloa (1986-88); Parish Priest of Sacred Heart Church, Iruthayapuram, Batticaloa (1988-89); Parish Priest of Our Lady of Good Health, Akkaraipattu (1989-93); and Director of the Catechetical, Biblical and Liturgical Apostolate, Batticaloa (1993-99). Between 1999 and 2001 he studied at the Pontifical Urban University. On returning to Sri Lanka he served as Professor and Formator at the National Seminary in Kandy (2001-11). In 2011 he was appointed Episcopal vicar of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Trincomalee-Batticaloa. He became general treasurer of the diocese in 2012. On 3 June 2015 he became Bishop of Trincomalee.

Pope Francis, who accepted the resignation of Bishop Joseph Kingsley Swampillai, appointed him Bishop of Trincomalee on June 03, 2015. The consecration and installation of the new bishop was held on July 25, 2015.
